Further information

Kodama are tree spirits appeared in Princess Mononoke. They are children of old trees, and are a sign that the forest is healthy.

Kodama have white skin with black and grey, glowing eyes. Each Kodak has a different head but they all have three black dots on their faces to symbolize their eyes and mouth.

The Kodama have been living in the forest before the start of the movie. They appeared when Ashitaka was helping Kohroku and an injured man get to Irontown. They later reappear when San was bringing Ashitaka to the Forest Spirit to help his gun wound, watching from the trees and ground.

After Lady Eboshi cuts off the Forest Spirit’s head, the Kodama start dying along with the forest. After the land is healed, one Kodama appears, showing viewers that the forest is growing back and promising new life.
