Further information

Totoro or Big Totoro, also known as Miminzuku, is the title tetartagonist in Studio Ghibli’s film My Neighbor Totoro, as well as its sequel, Mei and the Kittenbus. He is the mascot of Studio Ghibli. Totoro appears as a large furry creature with grey fur and beige belly with grey arrows on his chest. He has pointy ears, long whiskers along with large paws with long claws. When he floats his mouth expands greatly. His silhouette vaguely resembles that of an owl.

Totoro’s name is derived from the descriptor Neighborhood troll in Tokorozawa, after the forest that the film’s location is based on. His appearance is based on Horned owl, and his name during concept was Miminzuku, delivered from Mimizuku, Japanese name of Horned owl.

There are several different versions of Totoro, a big Totoro, a medium sized one (the blue one, also known as Chu Totoro), and a tiny Totoro (the white one, also known as Chibi Totoro). It is thought that Totoro is the king of the forest, as he is the biggest and the little ones follow him.
