Further information

Enjoy the flowers that were written about in the Manyoshu along with emotional waka poetry. This is the 16th instalment of the "Adult Sketch Colouring Book" series, which is based on the concept of enjoying colouring books like sketching. This colouring book is based on the theme of the Manyoshu.

The Manyoshu has attracted attention as the source of the new era name "Reiwa". It is classified into miscellaneous poems, love poems, and elegies, and the poems are divided into long poems, short poems, and tanka.

It is the oldest collection of waka poetry in Japan, composed by people of various ranks, including emperors, aristocrats, lower-ranking officials, and defense personnel. The collection includes a a wide range of flowers, including those that appear in the waka poetry of famous poets, flowers that you rarely see in everyday life, and flowers with unique names. The line illustrations are drawn with a free-flowing touch that is full of life.

The coloured illustrations express the elegant and graceful atmosphere of the Manyo period, and are characterized by beautiful, transparent colours. In addition, the opposite part of the illustration introduces the origins and characteristics of the flowers, as well as the corresponding waka poetry.

A brief explanation of the content of the waka poetry is provided. Through waka poetry, you can experience the thoughts and scenes of people who lived in the Manyo period. This book introduces 19 types of flowers, but the Manyoshu contains over 150 poems about plants.

You can use the colouring book as a starting point to find the "Manyo flowers" that poets loved. Recommended for: Those who are interested in flowers from the Manyo period Those who like flower and botanical colouring books.
